The urology department in the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) was the first to adopt the Da Vinci robots\u2019+ technology. More than 150 operations have been performed annually since its introduction.<\/p>\n<p>CHL&#8217;s commitment to innovation doesn&#8217;t stop there. Recognizing the potential of robotics beyond urology, general and orthopedic surgeons at the hospital have been utilising the technology as well. This expansion has yielded impressive results, with these departments now routinely performing over <a href=\"https:\/\/delano.lu\/article\/delano_robot-surgery-luxembourg#:~:text=In%202016%2C%20the%20first%20visceral%20and%20orthopaedic%20interventions%20began%2C%20with%20300%20and%20395%20completed%20to%20date%2C%20respectively.\">300 and 395<\/a> robotic procedures annually in their respective fields.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Robert Schuman Hospital and MAKO Robots to support surgeries\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Beyond the advancements at CHL, another Luxembourg hospital, Robert Schuman Hospital, is actively leveraging the power of robotic surgery. Here, the focus is on the MAKO robotic arm assisted system, specifically designed to aid in knee replacement procedures.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, orthopedic surgeons at Robert Schumann hospital, Dr Pit Putzeys and Dr Philippe Wilmes started offering <a href=\"https:\/\/today.rtl.lu\/news\/luxembourg\/a\/1371764.html\">knee prosthetics surgery<\/a><u>,<\/u> with the use of robots and on an ambulatory basis.<\/p>\n<p>The 3000th surgical operation assisted by the robot was carried out at Robert Schuman in 2023. According to the hospital, this technology has been allowing surgeons to perform an individually planned, 3D-assisted procedure, based on a patient&#8217;s specific diagnosis and anatomy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrecision and patient safety are at the forefront of this new surgical technique,\u201d Doctors Putzeys and Wilmes say in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Success Recorded with Robot-assisted Surgical Systems <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While robotic surgery adoption has been steadily rising across Luxembourg, the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) has strengthened its position as a national leader in this field.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>CHL records 1,000 Successful Surgeries in 5 Years<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Using the Da Vinci Mako robotic system, CHL has successfully performed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chl.lu\/fr\/le-chl-celebre-plus-de-1000-operations-realisees-avec-le-robot-chirurgical-da-vinci\">over 1,000 surgical procedures<\/a> as of December 2023. This allows them to carry out more meticulous work and achieve unrivalled precision in the operating procedures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reduced Complications and Shorter Stays <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A significant reduction in complications is a key advantage of robotic surgery. This benefit is particularly observable in long and highly complex surgeries, where both during and after interventions, the risk of complications is minimized.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the surgical systems offer surgeons the ability to navigate through complex anatomical structures with high accuracy. He noted a successful case, where the robot precisely achieved the planned under-reaming of 1mm. Depending on the implant type, robotic surgery also offers the potential for minimally invasive techniques.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have just returned from learning robotic hip surgery at the Mako Lab in the Centre hospitalier Kirchberg, Luxembourg, hosted by Dr. Pierre Putzeys. It was a fantastic experience,\u2019\u2019 comments Professor Hart on LinkedIn. \u201cMaybe we were lucky with the first case? So, we tried another case, and achieved the same perfect result.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Faster Recovery and Potential Cost Benefits<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The robot-assisted technique allows surgeons to undertake more complicated surgeries that are more comfortable for patients and cost-friendly for the National Health Fund (NHF).<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the cost-to-patients are lower or, worse, remain the same for robotic-assisted surgery compared to traditional methods. Admittedly, the Da Vinci robots used in Luxembourg \u2013 which are some of the most advanced robotic surgery technologies in the world \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/today.rtl.lu\/news\/luxembourg\/a\/1337352.html#:~:text=The%20operating%20robot%20called%20Da%20Vinci%20was%20developed%20by%20a%20Californian%20company%20and%20costs%20an%20impressive%20%E2%82%AC2.2%20million.\">cost \u20ac2.2m each<\/a> as of 2019, according to RTL Today.<\/p>\n<p>So, it increases the cost of surgical operations on an hourly basis. But the increase in surgical operation costs may reduce thanks to the lower admission hours and <a href=\"https:\/\/cmirs.com\/the-many-benefits-of-the-da-vinci-surgical-system\/#:~:text=Using%20the%20da%20Vinci%20system,recovery%20times%20for%20our%20patients.\">quicker recovery times<\/a>. After all, the technology is less-invasive and patients can be discharged the same day.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Additional Robotics <\/strong><strong>Benefits <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Robot-assisted laparoscopies, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4789944\/#:~:text=Robotic%20urological%20surgery%20reduces%20post,satisfaction%20%5B1%2C2%5D.\">Current Urology<\/a>, are also effective in many areas and notably achieve the following effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of postoperative pain in urology surgery<\/li>\n<li>Earlier resumption of bowel function<\/li>\n<li>Faster return to normal activity<\/li>\n<li>Less pain related to healing of the abdominal wall<\/li>\n<li>Decreased amount of bleeding and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6487454\/\">less<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6487454\/\"> visible scars<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Minimally Invasive Surgical Techniques<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The shift towards minimally invasive surgical techniques in Luxembourg has been instrumental in improving patient care. Surgery has traditionally involved performing invasive procedures to treat various diseases. These procedures involved making a large incision in the wall, which was necessary but caused trauma to the patient.<\/p>\n<p>In recent decades, thanks to the invention of digital imaging technology, combined with optical engineering and improvements in video displays, surgeons can operate inside body cavities without the need to perform large incisions on the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than creating large incisions several centimetres long, minimally-invasive surgical techniques generally rely on incisionless surgery (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7096234\/#:~:text=The%20field%20of%20robot%2Dassisted,adequate%20traction%20of%20resected%20tissues.\">endoscopic resection surgery<\/a><u>,<\/u> which is performed through the urinary tract) or small incisions of 5 to 10 mm to insert instruments.<\/p>\n<p>In urology, it is now possible to treat most diseases with a minimally invasive approach.<\/p>\n<p>There are different minimally invasive surgical techniques depending on the diseases to be treated.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Traditional Laparoscopy<\/strong>: They consist of making small incisions to insert a micro-camera, as well as small instruments into the stomach. This is a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/laparoscopy\/#:~:text=Laparoscopy%20is%20a%20type%20of,inside%20the%20tummy%20or%20pelvis.\">keyhole surgery<\/a> used to remove organs, repair hernias, remove the womb or fibroid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Robot-assisted laparoscopy: <\/strong>Laparoscopic machine-assisted surgeries with robots like DaVinci models are used for the operation of heart surgeries, urological cancers, gynecologic surgeries, and prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Contribution of Robotics to Minimally-invasive Surgeries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/health.usf.edu\/medicine\/urology\/robotic_surgery\">Surgical robots<\/a> are instruments with arms, cameras, and platforms that surgeons manipulate using controls. While they cannot perform tasks entirely on their own in humans, they provide significant assistance during minimally invasive surgery.<\/p>\n<p>One major benefit is improved camera control. In traditional laparoscopy, holding the camera for hours can cause hand fatigue and shaky movements, potentially affecting the surgeon&#8217;s view. Robotic systems, such as optical door robots, can hold the camera steady, allowing the surgeon to focus on the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>The Da Vinci robot takes robotic assistance a step further. It holds the surgical instruments as well, allowing the surgeon to operate remotely while seated comfortably in a console. This offers several advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>3D vision<\/strong>: The system provides a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intuitive.com\/en-us\/patients\/da-vinci-robotic-surgery\/about-the-systems\">magnified 3D view<\/a> of the surgical field, enhancing depth perception and precision.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved dexterity<\/strong>: The robotic arms have greater articulation than the human wrist, allowing for more intricate movements during surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Da Vinci robot is particularly valuable for complex procedures requiring high precision, such as radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy for small kidney tumors, and repair of congenital malformations like pyeloureteral junction obstruction.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Collaborations Driving Technological <\/strong><strong>Advancements<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The impressive advancements in Luxembourg&#8217;s robotic surgery landscape aren&#8217;t solely attributable to adopting innovative technologies.
