According to reports, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit<\/a> against OpenAI and its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Musk highlighted that the company violated its founding agreement by prioritizing profits for a major investor over the broader interests of humanity. The lawsuit details that Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Elon Musk established the company in December 2015. At the outset, the founders would use OpenAI as an open-source entity to facilitate the development of AI technology for the greater good. Contrary to the terms of the agreement, the company drifted from its initial plan to a profit-seeking venture.<\/p>\n

Musk -a co-founder of OpenAI, withdrew from the company in 2018. The lawsuit, filed in a San Francisco Superior Court, centres on OpenAI’s association with Microsoft.<\/p>\n

While expressing his disagreement with the company’s current mission, Elon Musk stated in his lawsuit<\/a> that “OpenAI Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company, Microsoft. Under its new board, it is not just developing but is actually refining AGI to maximize profit for Microsoft rather than for the benefit of humanity.”<\/p>\n

Elon Musk also believes that “In accordance with its new Board, OpenAI is not only developing but actively refining an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) to prioritize Microsoft’s profit instead of advancing the greater good of humanity,” the filing<\/a> states.”<\/p>\n

The filing also mentions that Altman and Brockman approached Musk in 2015 to establish an open-source, non-profit organization to benefit humanity. The lawsuit asserted that last year, OpenAI “violated the founding agreement” by releasing its latest GPT-4, whereby it is referred as a Microsoft product.<\/p>\n

Elon Musk filed a court motion on Friday seeking to have research and technology done by OpenAI available to the public and to stop executives in Microsoft and OpenAI from profiting. Regulators<\/a> in the U.S. and U.K. will launch probes into the $13 billion multiyear agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI. Microsoft<\/a> has a 49% stake in OpenAI’s for-profit activities, which in turn benefits from OpenAI’s gains made involving goods like Word, Excel, and Outlook.<\/p>\n

According to the lawsuit<\/a>, Elon Musk believes that Microsoft stands to make a fortune in the entire debacle. He claimed, “The Internal details of GPT-4 are only known to OpenAI and, on information and belief, to Microsoft. GPT-4 is, hence, the opposite of OpenAI\u201d.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit further reads<\/a>, “And it is closed for proprietary commercial reasons: Microsoft stands to make a fortune selling GPT-4 to the public, which would not be possible if OpenAI – as it is required to do – makes the technology freely available for the public to use.”<\/p>\n

Elon Musk concludes<\/a>, “Contrary to the Founding Agreement, Defendants have chosen to use GPT-4 not for the benefit of humanity but as proprietary technology to maximize profit for literally the largest company in the world.”<\/p>\n

In their first response, OpenAI stated that they are actively working on getting the suit struck out, as well as releasing the emails they received from Elon Musk. This is expected to escalate the feud between the two tech companies. OpenAI explained that both the startup and Musk, who bankrolled its launch in 2015 – saw the need for the company to divert from the initial non-profit company to a for-profit company to gain the required resources to compete against industry leaders, like Google.<\/p>\n
