Elon Musk Takes Legal Action Against OpenAI: Is Microsoft really prioritising profit over humanity’s interests?

Introduction

In a shocking turn of events, OpenAI is currently facing heat. A wide range of publishers, especially their co-founder, Elon Musk, contend that OpenAI has deviated from its original mission to promote artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. Instead, it uses people’s data to train its large language models.

Elon Musk – the visionary entrepreneur behind SpaceX and Tesla, was one of the original founders backing OpenAI. Musk has now accused OpenAI – of becoming a profit-driven entity, prioritizing the interests of its major investor, Microsoft, over its stated goals.

This legal battle, if unabated, promises to be a high-stakes clash between two prominent tech companies, as it will inevitably affect the future of Artificial Intelligence development, as well as the ethical implications surrounding this revolutionary technology.

Elon Musk’s Lawsuit against OpenAI

According to reports, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its co-founders Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Musk highlighted that the company violated its founding agreement by prioritizing profits for a major investor over the broader interests of humanity. The lawsuit details that Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Elon Musk established the company in December 2015. At the outset, the founders would use OpenAI as an open-source entity to facilitate the development of AI technology for the greater good. Contrary to the terms of the agreement, the company drifted from its initial plan to a profit-seeking venture.

Musk -a co-founder of OpenAI, withdrew from the company in 2018. The lawsuit, filed in a San Francisco Superior Court, centres on OpenAI’s association with Microsoft.

While expressing his disagreement with the company’s current mission, Elon Musk stated in his lawsuit that “OpenAI Inc. has been transformed into a closed-source de facto subsidiary of the largest technology company, Microsoft. Under its new board, it is not just developing but is actually refining AGI to maximize profit for Microsoft rather than for the benefit of humanity.”

Elon Musk also believes that “In accordance with its new Board, OpenAI is not only developing but actively refining an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) to prioritize Microsoft’s profit instead of advancing the greater good of humanity,” the filing states.”

The filing also mentions that Altman and Brockman approached Musk in 2015 to establish an open-source, non-profit organization to benefit humanity. The lawsuit asserted that last year, OpenAI “violated the founding agreement” by releasing its latest GPT-4, whereby it is referred as a Microsoft product.

Elon Musk filed a court motion on Friday seeking to have research and technology done by OpenAI available to the public and to stop executives in Microsoft and OpenAI from profiting. Regulators in the U.S. and U.K. will launch probes into the $13 billion multiyear agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI. Microsoft has a 49% stake in OpenAI’s for-profit activities, which in turn benefits from OpenAI’s gains made involving goods like Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Does Microsoft simply aim at making a Fortune out of OpenAI?

According to the lawsuit, Elon Musk believes that Microsoft stands to make a fortune in the entire debacle. He claimed, “The Internal details of GPT-4 are only known to OpenAI and, on information and belief, to Microsoft. GPT-4 is, hence, the opposite of OpenAI”.

The lawsuit further reads, “And it is closed for proprietary commercial reasons: Microsoft stands to make a fortune selling GPT-4 to the public, which would not be possible if OpenAI – as it is required to do – makes the technology freely available for the public to use.”

Elon Musk concludes, “Contrary to the Founding Agreement, Defendants have chosen to use GPT-4 not for the benefit of humanity but as proprietary technology to maximize profit for literally the largest company in the world.”

In their first response, OpenAI stated that they are actively working on getting the suit struck out, as well as releasing the emails they received from Elon Musk. This is expected to escalate the feud between the two tech companies. OpenAI explained that both the startup and Musk, who bankrolled its launch in 2015 – saw the need for the company to divert from the initial non-profit company to a for-profit company to gain the required resources to compete against industry leaders, like Google.

Last year, Elon Musk ventured his own company – xAI, directly challenging the offerings of OpenAI. This move signals a significant development in the AI landscape, as Musk aims to carve its own path in the industry. Garnering substantial attention, xAI has swiftly amassed a staggering $500 million in investments from enthusiastic backers, further solidifying its position as a formidable competitor in the rapidly evolving AI market.

Conclusion

As the legal battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI develops, it raises crucial questions about the ethical principles guiding the development and deployment of artificial intelligence. Should profit motives take precedence over the greater good of humanity? Or should companies like OpenAI remain true to their founding missions, even if it means sacrificing financial gain? The outcome of this case will set a precedent for the future of AI and redefine how companies approach this transformative technology.

Call to Action

Reject AI Monopolies. Embrace Decentralized Ecosystems.

The battle between Elon Musk and OpenAI is more than just corporate profits – it’s a fight for the soul of artificial intelligence – the soul of humanity’s existence and under which terms. Will we allow AI development to be controlled by a handful of tech giants only blood thirsty and motivated by financial gains? Or will we demand decentralized, open-source AI ecosystems that prioritize the greater good of humanity?

Join the movement to keep AI ethical, transparent, and accessible to all. Support initiatives that promote open-source AI development and hold companies accountable for prioritizing profits over people. Our future depends on democratizing this powerful technology, not monopolizing it to the hands of a handful.

Raise your voice. Join the discussion. Be part of shaping an AI revolution that empowers society, not enslaves it to the whims of corporate greed.
