Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has dramatically evolved in recent times, truly revolutionizing, reshaping and radically transforming lives. Switzerland – an advanced country in AI capabilities, ranks second after the US in terms of AI patents per capita and is equally ahead of France, Italy, Germany and the UK, showing first-hand how AI can turn around core sectors. This article examines the impact of AI on Swiss industries, specifically: Health and pharmaceuticals, banking and finance, education and construction.
AI Disrupts the $145 Billion Swiss and Global Pharma Sector
Financial investment in pharmaceutical research and development has steadily increased in recent years. Deloitte reported that the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies, including, Roche and Novartis, invested US $145 billion in research and development in 2023, which is an increase of 4.5% comparatively to the previous year’s investment.
The Swiss pharmaceutical industry is harnessing AI to revolutionize drug development. AI markedly speeds up the identification of potential drug candidates and enhances the accuracy of success rate predictions. By reducing costs and accelerating the development process, AI significantly shortens the time required to bring new drugs to market.
A Statista report released in 2024 reveals that Swiss biotech companies invested 2.4 billion francs in research in 2023 – a significant increase from previous investments. The funding and focused effort graphically demonstrate the value of AI in the Swiss pharmaceutical landscape.
Jessica David Pluss in the online publication, swissinfo.ch, writes, “Swiss pharmaceutical giants Novartis and Roche are dedicating huge budgets, using AI in efforts to discover new drugs. For years, Roche has invested $3 billion annually to overhaul the digital infrastructure and integrate AI into its research and development (R & D) process.”
She further highlights, “In January 2024, Novartis offered $37.5 million upfront to Isomorphic, a Google DeepMind offshoot, in a project aimed at achieving milestones in developing three new drug candidates. Novartis pledged a further $1.2 billion once the project was completed. There have been more than 100 deals involving Swiss companies and AI drug researchers in the last decade.”
Transforming Swiss Education: How AI is Shaping Policy and Strategy
The Swiss government significantly supports AI research and development through funding and other initiatives to various state institutions. In April 2024 swissinfo.ch reported, “The government plans to spend CHF 29.2 billion ($32 billion) in the next four years (2024-2028) to retain Switzerland’s status as a global leader in education, research and innovation.”
In 2019, Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) prepared an important report focusing on AI in Education; it highlighted the importance of developing courses that impart skills for AI deployment in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. State secretary Maria Hirayama signed the report.
The government recognizes the need for training, re-skilling and up-skilling to equip the workforce and adapt it to changing needs of the AI-driven modern labor market; it formulates policies designed to align educational institutions with emerging technological dynamics.
AI Overhauls Swiss Banking: Automation and Fraud Detection at the Forefront
AI has had an exciting and challenging transformative impact; it’s a game-changer. From automating repetitive tasks to enhancing risk management and fraud detection, AI-powered solutions have proved invaluable for countess institutions.
Switzerland – a country known for dynamic innovation and a robust banking sector has keenly embraced AI to boost the financial industry. According to a May 2024 Statista report, Switzerland’s banking and finance sector is worth approximately $87.83 billion in 2024.
As such, many banks have leveraged AI for seamless operations, tailored solutions and personalized support services. UBS, Switzerland’s leading bank, successfully leverages AI to bolster investment strategies and improve services. UBS uses machine learning algorithms to generate specially tailored client recommendations, enhancing efficiency in investment decisions.
AI Drives the $10 Trillion Global Construction Boom: Switzerland at the Helm
In January 2024 Upmetrics.co showed that the global construction industry was worth $10.7 trillion in 2023. AI is used to overcome challenges related to labour shortages, safety, schedule overruns and cost factors. In fact, Analysts expect the massive reliance on strategic AI to increase in the future.
Switzerland’s construction industry, by comparison, is worth about €32 billion in 2024 ($ 35 b), reports IBIS world industry statistics and trends. AI profoundly dominates all project cycles, from inception and design, to financing, bidding, operations, asset management and transportation. Overall, AI drives Switzerland’s construction industry, catapulting it to new heights.
Switzerland’s AI Revolution: A Strategic Transformation Across Industries
The Swiss government has established a robust AI ecosystem, spurring investment. For example, a report published by holisticai.com in September 2023 showed that the government had set aside €10 million as investment in the European Lighthouse on Secure and Safe AI. It revealed that Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Nvidia and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) were jointly engaged in a project to develop an AI-capable supercomputer. The report demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the AI sector.
