Italy’s Automotive Industry is revolutionised by AI. By 2030 it will be valued at US$17.34 billion
According to a Statista report, Italy’s AI market is forecasted to reach a market size of US$3.85 billion by 2024. This will bring an anticipated compound annual growth rate (CAGR 2024-2030) of 28.51%, with analysts expecting the trajectory to lead to a market volume of US$17.34 billion by 2030.
Italian companies are increasingly adopting AI solutions to enhance day-to-day operations in the automotive sector. For example, FCA Italy (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and Stellantis, the parent company, integrate AI for vehicle automation, driver assistance systems, and manufacturing processes.
Further, Magneti Marelli employs AI in the automotive component manufacturing and vehicle diagnostics, with Leonardo utilising AI in aerospace and defence for predictive maintenance and autonomous systems. Pirelli applies AI to optimise tyre manufacturing processes and also utilises it for predictive maintenance.
According to a press release published on November 18, 2020, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Kaluza, a leading intelligent energy platform, “entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to explore delivering cheaper, simpler and sustainable electric vehicle charging services to FCA’s customers through Kaluza’s platform.”
Roberto Di Stefano, Head of e-Mobility for the EMEA region at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, said: “This agreement represents an excellent opportunity to reduce the charging costs of electric vehicles, lowering the cost of ownership for Fiat 500 EV customers. The innovation will allow Fiat 500 EV owners to experience the benefits of smart charging without needing to install specific charging equipment.”
Quoting a study by Accenture, Reuters projected this in May 15, 2022: “Italian companies stand to gain a 50 billion euro profit from AI.” The study emphasises the demand for sustainable products and the critical role of transparency in communicating sustainability initiatives.
AI is Driving Italy’s Smart Factories with IoT, Robotics and Cutting Edge Technologies
Italy is making significant investments to promote AI innovation and establish a regulatory framework for responsible development; the government has approved a bill to allocate up to 1 billion euros to support AI projects and startups, Reuters reported in April 2023.
The Reuters report noted Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had designated AI as a top priority during Italy’s G7 presidency; Italian companies took the cue, embracing AI for growth. For example, Alba Robot SRL, a leading company, is pioneering an autonomous mobility platform tailored for indoor and pedestrian transportation; it aims to revolutionise mobility for older people and those with disabilities.
Alba Robot SRL’s solution integrates AI, robotics, voice assistants, and IoT technologies to create autonomous-assist driving systems for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and personal vehicles. It incorporates cutting-edge technology from automotive, robotics, and IoT to enhance independence and connectivity through cloud services. Also, Illogic, another Italian company, leverages extended reality and artificial intelligence to propel client businesses to prosperity.
AI is Transforming Italy’s Agricultural Sector with Precision Farming Equipment
AI is key in modernising Italy’s agricultural sector with precision farming. Farmers use drones, sensors and other AI-powered tools to gather real-time data on soil quality, crop health, and weather conditions. AI algorithms analyse data to predict crop diseases and optimise planting schedules, promoting sustainable practices.
The sector is being transformed by integrating artificial intelligence and Agriculture 4.0 digital technologies. It harnesses AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital mapping to promote precision farming. Farmers use AI-driven sensors to monitor humidity and track crop conditions.
The Italian company SDF uses the ultra-modern DEUTZ-FAHR 8280 TTV farm machinery. DEUTZ-FAHR 8280 TTV has multiple digital solutions to enhance sustainability; its connected tractors communicate with digital platforms, providing real-time data to maximise yield efficiency while supporting environmental conservation.
An SDF press release published on April 19, 2023 revealed: “We’ve acquired 20 new SAME branded DEUTZ-FAHR 8280 machines exclusively developed for BF SpA. The machines offer fuel consumption advantages and deliver innovations for digitising our production cycles.”
AI is Impacting Italy’s Biotech & Medical Diagnostics, Supporting Precision Healthcare
Biotechnology and medical innovation contribute significantly to Italy’s GDP, reaching 11%. With approximately 4,300 companies active in the medical devices sector and numerous biotech startups, Italy successfully tackles various diagnostic challenges. In 2024, emerging Italian enterprises like Cellex, Prebiomics and Cellply are utilising advanced bioreactors, AI-driven diagnostic solutions, and microfluidics, BBC Story Works reports.
AI innovations enhance precise and efficient imaging and diagnostic capabilities; AI helps in early disease detection, identification of subtle anomalies, and diagnostic accuracy. Noteworthy examples of AI implementation in biotech and medical diagnostics include the IRCCS San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Lombardy; the institution successfully leverages AI for early detection of breast cancer through image analysis.
AI is Transforming Italy’s Public Service, Saving Time and Costs
The government of Italy is actively integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its public service through strategies and initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, improving service delivery, and fostering innovation. For instance, the government is implementing customer service chatbots through the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies; the ministry launched a chatbot to assist citizens under the Reddito di cittadinanza program; it aims to reduce costs and improve response times in all public service inquiries.
Further, the government widely applies AI in tax administration, using tools like Anonimometro to analyze data for identifying tax evasion. The system allows the Italian tax authority to cross-reference income declarations with asset data, enhancing the ability to combat tax fraud.
The government’s AI strategy targets data access and quality through Open Data initiatives; it includes the creation of interoperable datasets that can be utilized across public administrations, fostering a data-driven approach to AI applications. The government’s comprehensive AI strategy prioritizes public administration; it adopts initiatives to enhance AI education and skills among public employees, fostering partnerships to support the development of AI solutions.
The authorities encourage collaboration with the GovTech ecosystem, a crucial step for developing AI solutions in public administration. It plans to launch various accelerator programs to identify and support startups that provide innovative solutions for public services.
Finally, the government is working on establishing an ethical and regulatory framework for AI, ensuring that AI applications in the public sector are developed responsibly and transparently. The initiative includes guidelines for the procurement and development of AI applications across Italy’s entire public sector.
